NFDI4Health will open its Friday Lecture on 31 January 2025 on the topic of "Synthetic Data in Health Research". Holger Fröhlich and Fabian Prasser, will present synthetic data as a tool to overcome data protection challenges and promote scientific progress. The lecture will be held online and is open4all.

NFDI4Health Open Friday Lecture on Synthetic Data

Individual health data is essential for scientific progress, particularly in advancing artificial intelligence. However, the exchange of real health data is often restricted by strict data protection regulations. A promising solution to this challenge is the use of synthetic data. These artificially generated datasets mimic the statistical properties of real health data and hence reduce the risk of disclosing sensitive information. This allows researchers to safely use them to develop new analytical methods and to address data availability gaps – while protecting patient privacy.

NFDI4Health places a strong emphasis on synthetic data to promote scientific collaboration and technological advancements in medicine. In this Open Friday Lecture, our speakers Prof. Holger Fröhlich (Fraunhofer SCAI) and Prof. Fabian Prasser (BIH @ Charité) from NFDI4Health will provide an in-depth look at the promises and challenges of synthetic data and present the synthetic data services and workflows developed by NFDI4Health. First, they will introduce the advanced AI tools VAMBN and MultiNODEs, which are used to generate synthetic health data. This will be followed by an overview of SYNDAT, a public, web-based tool that enables users to visualise and evaluate the quality and risk of synthetic data. Finally, they will address open challenges and considerations when working with synthetic data.
