The fifth round of the Data Train programme began with a festive opening ceremony on 15 January 2025. Around 200 people attended the event at the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT) in Bremen – both in person and online.

During the kick-off event, programme ambassadors Iris Pigeot, Oliver Glöckner, and Rolf Drechsler discussed the relevance of effective research data management methods and the role of data science with Tanja Hörner and Lina Schaare. Iris Pigeot is co-spokesperson for the NFDI4Health consortium. In a panel discussion, the audience gained insights into the specific requirements of data management across various disciplines, including geosciences and health sciences. Additionally, the pivotal role of the NFDI in establishing national structures for effective data management was highlighted. The impacts of AI and machine learning were also addressed. Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of not only managing research data but also ensuring its quality and accessibility – essential prerequisites for implementing the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable).

Data Train is a hybrid training programme and a core element of the NFDI4Health FAIR training. It fosters exchange in research data management and imparts relevant knowledge about handling research data to participants across various career stages. The programme was developed by the U Bremen Research Alliance, NFDI4Health, and other NFDI consortia and has been part of Data Nord since 2023. The Starter Track for beginners is free and runs from January to May 2025.
