The NFDI has been selected as one of 13 organisations to support the development of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). The goal is to create an open platform for European research and to enable transparent and secure access to research data. NFDI4Health congratulates the NFDI on this appointment and is pleased to contribute to the ongoing development of the EOSC Federation.

NFDI is part of the EOSC build phase

The EOSC Tripartite Governance recently selected 13 organisations to launch the development of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). One of these organisations is our umbrella association, the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI). This decision followed an open call in the summer of 2024, which received a total of 121 applications. Various factors were taken into account in the selection of organisations, such as the maturity of the resources, geographical representation, and willingness to collaborate voluntarily.

With the EOSC, the European Commission is building an open platform that promotes pan-European collaboration and the transparent exchange of research results. The EOSC Federation follows a flexible and community-driven approach, allowing work to be continuously adapted and developed. The construction of the EOSC will take place gradually, in several waves of candidate nodes, with the first step being a launch workshop in Brussels in March 2025. At this event, the invited organisations, the EOSC EU Node, and the Tripartite Group will work together to develop the Federation’s work plan and form cross-node groups for specific topics.

The invited organisations reflect the diversity of the European research space and represent both European and national, as well as thematic, nodes. A key element of the development is the handbook, which has been created by the EOSC Association in collaboration with the community and serves as a guide. This handbook will continue to evolve. The second wave of candidate nodes is expected in the summer of 2025, benefiting from the insights gained in the first wave and driving the development of the EOSC Federation forward.
