The DataSHIELD Conference in Groningen from 11 to 13 October 2023 was attended by a large number of representatives from mainly European research institutes and consortia implementing and running distributed data analysis projects through DataSHIELD. DataSHIELD is an open-source software for the privacy-preserving analysis of biomedical and health science data and is one of the 12 services provided by NFDI4Health. While the talks covered the advantages and obstacles of FAIR data analysis, a strong focus was also on improving current processes within the DataSHIELD community itself, such as the auditing process of packages, tutorials on user packages and the establishment of directed communication flows to the various stakeholder groups for pertinent issues.
4 members of NFDI4Health actively participated in the annual DataSHIELD Conference and gave presentations on new developments of DataSHIELD packages, preliminary results from ongoing research projects, challenges and adaptations for setting up a central analysis environment, and issues surrounding the harmonisation of research data. One of the highlights was the keynote speech by Tobias Pischon, in which he presented the NFDI4Health consortium and our vision on building an infrastructure to support personal health-related research in Germany.
